Understanding the Panchang.

The Panchang is the Vedic almanac — five limbs that together describe the quality and character of each day.

Tithi

The lunar day — one of 30 tithis in each lunar month, determined by the angular distance between the Sun and Moon. Each tithi carries a distinct energy: some favour beginnings, others endings, and a few are best left for rest. The tithi is the single most important element of the panchang for timing personal decisions.

Nakshatra

The lunar mansion — one of 27 nakshatras that the Moon passes through during its monthly cycle. Each nakshatra has a ruling deity, a planetary lord, and a specific nature (fixed, movable, sharp, or soft). The nakshatra determines the Moon's mood and is critical for muhurta — the selection of auspicious timing.

Yoga

The luni-solar combination — one of 27 yogas formed by the sum of the Sun's and Moon's longitudes. Unlike the tithi and nakshatra which track the Moon alone, the yoga reflects the relationship between both luminaries. Yogas range from highly auspicious (Siddha, Amrita) to cautionary (Vishkumbha, Vyaghata).

Karana

The half-tithi — each tithi is divided into two karanas, giving 60 karanas in a lunar month. There are 11 types, of which 7 are movable and 4 are fixed. Karanas influence the success of activities undertaken during their span — some favour trade, others favour spiritual practice, and a few counsel caution.

Inauspicious Windows

Rahu Kaal, Gulika Kaal and Yamaganda are daily windows calculated from the sunrise time. Each is ruled by a malefic planet (Rahu, Saturn, and Yama respectively) and lasts approximately 90 minutes. New beginnings, important meetings, and travel are traditionally avoided during these periods.
