You open the family WhatsApp group and find a forwarded message: Jupiter moves into Leo on 31 October 2026, and it lists the signs that gain. You do not know which sign your Moon is in, and the message never says what a change of sign alters. Both have plain answers, and your own Kundli holds the first.
If your Moon sign is Cancer, Aries, Aquarius, Sagittarius or Libra, then Jupiter in Leo falls in a house the classical gochara (transit) rule counts as favourable from the Moon: the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th or 11th. But this Leo pass lasts under three months, from 31 October 2026 to 25 January 2027, before Jupiter turns back into Cancer.
1. What changes on 31 October 2026, and what does not
The sidereal ephemeris I work from, the table of planetary positions, has Jupiter leaving Cancer for Leo on 31 October 2026. Sidereal means measured against the fixed stars, and the Lahiri ayanamsa, the measured gap between that star-fixed zodiac and the seasonal one, is the setting I compute on. That is the whole astronomical event. Jupiter crosses one of the twelve borders of the zodiac, this time from Cancer, where it is exalted (uccha, its strongest placement), into Leo.
Jupiter is Guru and Leo is Simha in Sanskrit, so a Hindi column calls this the Guru gochar (Jupiter transit) into Simha rashi. Leo belongs to the Sun, which the sage Parashara's friendship table counts as a friend of Jupiter, so Jupiter leaves its exaltation for a friend's sign: not a hostile one, and not its debilitation sign, Capricorn.
According to the NASA planetary fact sheet, Jupiter's sidereal orbital period is 4,332.589 days, about 11.86 years, so it averages roughly a year in each sign. Its retrograde loops, the months when the planet seen from Earth appears to slide backwards, stretch and split those stays, as the windows in section 3 show.
A change of sign does not alter your Kundli, your birth horoscope, or the running dasha, the planetary period you are living through. Saturn stays in Pisces. Rahu and Ketu, the Moon's two nodes, change sign on 5 December 2026 by the mean node, the smoothed node position I compute with. Rahu goes from Aquarius into Capricorn and Ketu from Leo into Cancer; my Rahu-Ketu transit post explains how that axis is read from the Moon.
One more fact hangs on that date. For the first 35 days of this Leo pass, until 5 December 2026, Ketu shares the sign of Leo with Jupiter. I note it as a calendar fact; what it means for you, if anything, depends on where Leo falls in your Kundli.
2. The 5 Moon signs the classical rule favours
Count Leo from your Moon sign, the rashi printed on your Kundli, taking the Moon sign itself as the 1st house. The classical gochara (transit) rule treats Jupiter's transit as favourable when it falls in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th or 11th house from the natal Moon. With Jupiter in Leo, that list resolves to five Moon signs:
- Moon in Cancer: Leo is your 2nd house.
- Moon in Aries: Leo is your 5th house.
- Moon in Aquarius: Leo is your 7th house.
- Moon in Sagittarius: Leo is your 9th house.
- Moon in Libra: Leo is your 11th house.
If your Moon is in Leo, Jupiter is in the 1st house from your Moon sign, a whole-sign count, and the classical rule does not list the 1st as favourable. The remaining six Moon signs receive Jupiter in a house the rule does not favour either; that is where the rule withholds its support, not a forecast of trouble.
My Jupiter transit 2026 guide sets out all twelve Moon signs for Jupiter in Cancer. If a guide places Jupiter one sign earlier, in Cancer, shift each house one place forward: Jupiter is in Leo for 86 days, from 31 October 2026 to 25 January 2027.
The classical rule pairs each favourable house with an obstruction point called the Vedha. For Jupiter, all counted from your Moon, the pairs are:
- the 2nd is obstructed from the 12th;
- the 5th from the 4th;
- the 7th from the 3rd;
- the 9th from the 10th;
- the 11th from the 8th.
If another planet transits the paired house while Jupiter sits in the favoured one, the rule holds the benefit back for as long as the pairing lasts. I run this check before I call any of the five favourable; the steps below skip it.
Jupiter in Leo also casts its full aspects (drishti, the gaze a planet sends to distant signs) on three signs: the 7th from Leo (Aquarius), which every planet aspects, and the 5th (Sagittarius) and 9th (Aries), which are Jupiter's own special aspects. These are the aspects counted planet by planet, as Parashara's Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives them, and they are the ones I use for a transit.
If your Moon, your lagna (the rising sign) or a cluster of planets sits in one of those signs, Jupiter touches it by aspect during the pass.
Treat the five-sign list as a checklist and nothing more. A favourable house from the Moon tells me where Jupiter's theme can land; it does not tell me that it will. By Jupiter's theme I mean the matters the classical lists give to Jupiter: knowledge, teachers and dharma (right conduct). Your Moon sign is printed on your free Kundli, and it is the one line the rest of this post turns on.
3. How long Jupiter stays in Leo: an 86-day preview, then 2 more passes
Jupiter's first Leo pass lasts 86 days. Then Jupiter returns to Cancer and goes over that ground again. Here are the sign windows I computed, through to the middle of 2028:
- Jupiter in Leo: 31 October 2026 to 25 January 2027 (86 days).
- Jupiter back in Cancer: 25 January 2027 to 26 June 2027 (152 days).
- Jupiter in Leo again: 26 June 2027 to 26 November 2027 (153 days).
- Jupiter in Virgo: 26 November 2027 to 28 February 2028 (94 days).
- Jupiter in Leo a third time: 28 February 2028 to 24 July 2028 (147 days).
- Jupiter in Virgo again from 24 July 2028.
Add the three passes together and Jupiter spends 386 days in Leo in all, spread across the better part of two years. This first pass is the shortest, which is why I call it a preview, a word of mine and not a classical term. Every window is listed above, and whichever pass it is, a transit is read together with the running dasha.
Why Jupiter seems to go backwards
The back-and-forth is apparent retrograde motion: seen from Earth, an outer planet appears to reverse for some months each time Earth overtakes it on the inside track, and for Jupiter the NASA sheet puts that at every 398.88 days. Nothing reverses in space. I print no station dates (the days Jupiter appears to stop and turn) because the gochara rule counts signs, not degrees.
4. Two other ways to read it: KP degrees and Western dates
There is a finer instrument than the sign count, and I should say why I am not using it here. Krishnamurti's method, the KP system, reads a transit degree by degree through the star-lord and sub-lord of each significator, while the classical gochara in Mantreswara's Phaladeepika counts whole signs from the natal Moon.
A significator is a planet that stands for the matter asked; its star-lord and sub-lord are the finer rulers of the exact degree it occupies. For a sign change, the sign count is the right tool: it needs only your Moon sign, which every Kundli prints, whereas the sub-lord work needs a trusted birth time and a dated question to test it against. That work belongs in a consultation.
If a Western column gives you a different date for Jupiter in Leo, that is the ayanamsa at work: the sidereal zodiac I compute on sits about four-fifths of a sign behind the tropical zodiac those columns use. The dates in this post are sidereal, Lahiri, Indian time. I explain the two zodiacs in Vedic versus Western astrology.
5. Three things this ingress cannot do
First, an ingress (a planet's entry into a new sign) cannot time an event. No sign change tells me what will happen to you inside these 86 days, and I will not pretend that it does. A transit shows a theme and a window; whether that theme has a stage to act on is decided elsewhere in the Kundli.
Second, it cannot overrule the running period. In the Parashari tradition I follow, the running Vimshottari dasha (the 120-year cycle of planetary periods) builds the stage and a transit only walks onto it. The dasha is worked out from your own Moon at birth, so it is personal to your Kundli; the transit is the same sky for everyone. When the dasha lord has no link to Jupiter or to the sign of Leo, I treat the transit as a preview with no stage to act on; how the periods are built is in my mahadasha guide.
Third, it cannot be read from your Sun sign. The gochara rule counts from the Moon in the sidereal zodiac; a Sun-sign column counts from a different body, usually in a different zodiac as well, so its house numbers are not yours. I read the transit from the Moon first and the lagna second.
6. Three steps to read it for yourself
Step one: generate your free Kundli and write down two lines, your Moon sign and your running mahadasha (main period) with its antardasha (the sub-period inside it). Both are printed on the same page. The Moon changes sign about every two and a quarter days, so a birth time a few hours out puts your Moon sign in doubt only near a sign border.
Step two: count Leo from your Moon sign, with the Moon sign as 1. If the count lands on 2, 5, 7, 9 or 11, Jupiter's Leo pass sits in a house the classical rule lists as favourable; if it lands on 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12, it does not. Then count Leo from your lagna as well, because the house Leo occupies from the lagna names the area of life the theme belongs to.
Step three: ask whether the running period gives the transit a stage. I look for three links: the dasha lord is Jupiter itself; the dasha lord sits in Leo in your Kundli; or the dasha lord is the Sun, which owns Leo. Run the same three links for the antardasha lord. One link at either level, and I watch closely; none, and I set this pass aside as a preview with no stage to act on, then repeat the test for each later pass.
A worked example: Libra Moon, Scorpio lagna, Venus dasha
Suppose your Moon is in Libra: Leo is then your 11th from the Moon, a house the rule lists as favourable. Suppose your lagna is Scorpio: Leo is your 10th from the lagna, so the theme is work and standing; the Moon count says the house is favourable, the lagna count says where it lands.
Now suppose you are running a Venus mahadasha, with Venus placed anywhere but Leo. Venus is not Jupiter, it is not in Leo, and it is not the Sun that owns Leo. Suppose the antardasha lord fails the same three tests; then no link holds at either level, so I would set this 86-day pass aside as a preview and run the test again for the later passes.
Frequently asked questions
Is Jupiter in Leo favourable for a Leo Moon sign?
Not by the classical gochara rule, which lists the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th houses from the Moon and leaves out the 1st. With your Moon in Leo, Jupiter is in the 1st house from your Moon sign, by whole-sign count, for the 86 days of this first visit. I do not call that good or bad on its own; I read it from the lagna and the running period before saying anything about it.
How long does Jupiter stay in Leo this time?
Jupiter stays in Leo for 86 days, from 31 October 2026 to 25 January 2027. Jupiter then returns to Cancer on 25 January 2027 and re-enters Leo on 26 June 2027 for a longer stay of 153 days, with a third pass into Leo from 28 February 2028. Add the three passes and Jupiter spends 386 days in Leo in all, so this first pass is the shortest of the three.
Will Jupiter in Leo bring a job, a marriage or money?
No sign change can promise that. Neither will I. An ingress shows a theme and a window; whether anything happens inside it depends on the house Leo occupies in your Kundli, on the running period, and on what your past already shows about how Jupiter acts for you. Check your Moon sign first, then read the answer off your own Kundli.
Why does Jupiter go back into Cancer after entering Leo?
Jupiter appears to turn retrograde, an effect of viewpoint that leaves its orbit unchanged. Seen from Earth it drifts backwards for some months, so Jupiter slips back into Cancer on 25 January 2027 and then moves forward into Leo again on 26 June 2027. The gochara rule counts whole signs, so only the dates on which a planet changes sign matter to it.
Does Jupiter in Leo act differently for a Leo lagna than for a Leo Moon?
Yes, because the two counts answer different questions. The gochara rule counts from the Moon, so a Leo Moon has Jupiter in the 1st house from the Moon sign by whole-sign count, a house the rule does not favour. A Leo lagna names the house: Leo is the 1st from the lagna, the house of the self, so the theme lands on you, not on one area of life. The verdict still rests on the Moon and the running period.
7. What I will do with this transit, and what I will not
I compute the dates and print them plainly, and I show you how to count the houses yourself. The reading itself goes in one order: what your past already shows about Jupiter, then the Moon, the lagna and the running period, and only then a verdict on the transit.
I will not tell you that a promotion, a wedding or a windfall is coming because Jupiter crossed a border, and I will not prescribe a remedy for a transit I have not read in your Kundli.
If you want to go further, start where I start: generate your free Kundli, note the Moon sign and the running period, then ask for a free past reading, which describes something true about your past and says nothing about the future. If the past reads true, book a consultation and I will take the three passes with you one by one. I read the past first — because you should never have to take a prediction on faith.
